Pacers Open Pod Play with 2-0 Record, Defeat Centenary and Neumann

Marywood hosts Cyclones Saturday at 10:00am

Scranton, Pa. - Top seed Marywood University advanced in Atlantic East Conference Pod A action wins over Centenary (13-0) and Neumann (11-3) Friday afternoon. The Pacers (25-7) will face six-seed Centenary (8-23) Saturday for the right to advance to next weekend's Atlantic East Championship games.

Game 1 - Marywood 13, Centenary 0 (5 innings)

Marywood (24-7) exploded for 12 runs in the fourth inning en route to a 13-0 win over Centenary in the Pod A opening game. Eight of those runs came with two outs against the Pacers.

Marywood opened the scoring in the first with a pair of runs thanks to a Nina Kozar triple to right field that scored Lindsey Jason and a Ashdon Clark single that scored Kozar.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Marywood jumped on the Cyclones in the fourth. Pitcher Mara Hamm doubled to left center to clear the bases, putting the Pacers up 5-0. With two outs, Kozar singled to center to drive in two more.

Clark followed with an RBI double to right. Samantha Baltrusaitis then doubled down the left field line to switch places with Clark and give Marywood a 9-0 lead. Cait Becher doubled home pinch runner Sarah Sharpe, and pinch hitter Brooke McKay blasted a three-run homer to right for the game's final runs.

Kozar and Hamm each finished the opener with three RBI. Hamm stuck out two and allowed just two hits on her way to her 13th win of the season (13-2). Julia Campen (3-15) took the loss for the Cyclones, who fell to 7-23 with the loss.

Game 2 - Marywood 11, Neumann 3 (5 innings)

In the Pacers' nightcap, Marywood eliminated Neumann University from advancing with a 11-3 win. After going down 2-0 as the "away" team in the bottom of the first, the Pacers used a 10-run second inning to put the game out of reach.

Neumann got a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. In the top of the second, Jason started the Pacers' scoring with an RBI infield single. After a bases-loaded walk tied the game at 2-2, Kozar drove in three with a bases-clearing double down the left field line.

Clark then singled to center to drive in the Pacers' sixth run (6-2), and Baltrusaitis and Julianna Beidler drove in runs with singles to left field.  Annie Heyen's single to right center and Abbey Stalter's infield single to second drove in the Pacers' ninth and tenth runs, respectively.

Neumann cut the Pacers' lead to seven (10-3) with an RBI single to left in the bottom of the fourth from Bri Reim, but Marywood regained an eight run lead in the top of the fifth on a Kozar RBI single to center that scored Jason.

Gianna Marsico (11-5) struck out two and scattered seven hits for the win on the mound. Annie Heyen and Kozar were both 3-for-3 at the plate in the win over Neumann with Kozar driving in four runs.

Over the two games, Kozar went 5-for-6 with a double, triple, seven RBI and three runs scored.

Marywood will take on Centenary Saturday morning at 10:00 am. Marywood enters the final day of double-elimination pod play with a 2-0 record and must be defeated twice. Centenary is 1-1 after the opening day play. The Cyclones rebounded from their game one defeat to the Pacers to down Neumann 12-8 in the second game of the day. Neumann has been eliminated and closes their season at 13-27.
