Late Lead Slips Away in Baseball Loss at Gwynedd

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Host Gwynedd Mercy University walked it off against the Marywood baseball team Tuesday afternoon as they edged the Pacers 4-3 after scoring two runs in their final at-bats.

Marywood slipped to .500 (3-3) in Atlantic East Conference play and 14-6 overall, while the Griffins improved to 9-14 (2-4 AEC) and took two of three from Marywood in the three-game regular season series.

Gwynedd Mercy jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Nick Campbell singled down the right fiield line to drive in a run.  Marywood responded in the third, tying the game on a Jake Schuster RBI single to left center that would score Matthew Ortiz.

The Griffins would go back up thanks to a sac fly in the seventh, but Marywood's Max Slusser drove in two with a double to right center in the eighth, giving the Pacers a 3-2 lead.

After Campbell walked to start the bottom of the ninth, a pinch runner stole second and would later score on a single to tie the game.  Following another single and a walk to load the bases, Marywood forced an infield fly for the second out. Billy Collins would play hero for the hosts as he singled through the left side to drive across the winning run.

Michael Aronica had a strong start for Marywood on the mound, striking out six over 7.1 innings. Tyler Quick (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief work.

Slusser doubled twice as part of his 2-for-3, two RBI day.  Schuster finished 2-for-4 with a run driven in. Michael Tempel also had two hits, finishing 2-for-3.

Marywood is back in the field Friday when they visit Neumann University in Aston.
