Schuster Leads Baseball Past Neumann in Series Opener

Aston, Pa. - Jake Schuster had three hits, including a homer and triple, to lead Marywood to a 7-4 Atlantic East Conference baseball win at Neumann Friday afternoon. Schuster finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Marywood improves to 15-6 (4-3 AEC) with the road victory. 

Schuster was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI in the win after knocking his team-leading fourth longball of the year. The three-bagger was also his team-best fourth of the year.

Joseph Bruno (4-1) struck out 10 over six innings to get the win. AJ Jordan struck out two in two innings and Michael Klipple struck out two in the final inning to earn the save, his second of the year.

Neumann (7-12, 3-4 AEC) opened the game with a first inning homerun.  Quinton Roma tied the game in the second with an RBI single through the left side that scored Ben Gravel.  A solo homer from Schuster to right field in the top of the third gave the Pacers a brief 2-1 lead, but the Knights tied the game in the home half of the inning with an RBI single to center.

Marywood broke the game open in the fourth as Michael Tempel singled to right, and, coupled with an error, two Marywood runs scored. Schuster then tripled to right, scoring Tempel and giving the Pacers a 4-2 lead. 

The Knights would get two back in the sixth on a two-run single to right to make it a 5-4 ballgame, but Morgan Theobald drove in two with a double to left to end the host's threat of a comeback.

Marywood and Neumann are slated to play a doubleheader in Scranton tomorrow beginning at 12:00 pm, weather and field conditions permitting.
