Field Hockey Stopped by No. 18 SUNY Cortland

Rachel Yohn stops 15 Red Dragon shots

Cortland, N.Y. — Marywood University dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 18 SUNY Cortland on Thursday to open its field hockey season.

Lily Fox scored two goals and Jamie Snyder each scored once for the Red Dragons.

Cortland outshot the Pacers, 28-1, and held a 21-1 advantage in penalty corners, yet the game was still in question until the Red Dragons scored twice in the final 10 minutes.

Marywood goalie Rachel Yohn registered 15 saves, and the Pacers' Klaira Bievenour added two defensive saves.

Fox put Cortland on the board three minutes into the second quarter. A penalty corner play an initial shot from the right side was blocked, and after a battle by both teams in front of the cage Fox poked home the loose ball. Cortland's lead grew to 2-0 just under five minutes into the third quarter. Yohn turned aside a shot before Snyder knocked in the rebound.

The Red Dragons had a chance to extend the lead with 14 seconds left in the third, but Yohn made a save after Cortland was awarded a penalty stroke. With 9:16 remaining in the game Cortland converted on a penalty corner to take a 3-0 lead. Hanna Corrigan took a shot from the top of the circle after the initial corner insert, and Rice redirected the ball into the cage.

Fox closed the scoring with 3:41 left when she was led on a break off a pass from Keirra Ettere, dribbled into the circle and blasted in a shot.

Amanda Leeland registered the Pacers' lone shot.

Marywood heads back to New York this weekend to compete at the Vassar Tournament. The Pacers open with Endicott on Saturday.
