Garnet's Second Half Surge Downs Pacers

Swarthmore uses two second half goals to secure 3-1 win

Scranton, Pa. - Visiting Centennial Conference powerhouse Swarthmore College used two second half goals to secure a 3-1 victory over Marywood University Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action. The win moves the Garnet to 2-0 while the Pacers slip to 1-1.

Marywood opened the scoring in the 27th minute of play when goalkeeper Rebekah Becker sent a long ball to Victoria Tzitzis, who took a touch and finished a breakaway from 15 yards out to the far post netting. Becker was credited with a rare goalkeeper assist.

Despite several strong saves from Becker the rest of the first half, the Garnet were able to tie the game at 1-1 on a goal from Abby Chang after she dribbled through several defenders along the top of the 18 before finishing pas tBecker to the low right corner of the goal.

Swarthmore had a 12-8 advantage in shots in the first half, with Becker making nine stops and Josephine Sorce picking up a team save on a goal-line clearance.

Momentum turned in the visitor's favor in the second half as they fired off 18 shots to just one for Marywood. That pressure would pay off for Swarthmore in the 61st minute as Amelia Mounts took advantage of a mis-clearance by Marywood and finished into an open net for the game-winner.

With Marywood pushing numbers forward inside 10 minutes to play, the Garnet took advantage and got another breakaway in the 88th minute to make it a 3-1 final. Becker made a game-high 14 saves for the Pacers while Swarthmore's Nora Greer made three saves in the win.

Marywood's tough non-conference schedule continues Wednesday night as the Pacers travel across town to take on 10th-ranked The University of Scranton at 7:00pm.
