Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Wins By 22 on Play for Joey Day

Brendan Franko has made 83 percent of his shots during conference play

Scranton, Pa. — Joey Monaghan surely would have been proud of his Pacers.

With their former teammate heavy on their minds, the Marywood University men's basketball team played its best basketball of the season in front of an enthusiastic crowd of Monaghan's family and friends.

The Pacers ripped apart rival Cabrini University for a 79-57 victory at the Insalaco Arena. Marywood gave Jon Showers' his first Atlantic East Conference win of his coaching career.

Monaghan's presence was inescapable throughout the Insalaco Arena on Saturday. Both the Pacers and Cavaliers wore stickers with No. 22 on their uniforms. His former teammates presented his parents with framed jerseys. Sister Elizabeth McGill, IHM, Ph.D., Assistant Vice President of Student Success, read a prayer in commemoration of the moment prior to the game. As always, his No. 22 jersey hung in the home locker room.

Call it fate that the Pacers won by 22 points.

Along with the rest of the Atlantic East Conference, the Pacers held a Play for Joey Game to honor the former men's basketball alum's honor. Monaghan is a 2021 Marywood graduate that passed away in September to a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Proceeds from each conference institution's Play for Joey Game will go towards the Joey Monaghan Scholarship at Pennsbury High School in Bucks County. (Fans may donate to the scholarship fund through the conference's Venmo account.)

Monaghan would have been proud of the double-double from Brendan Franko off of the bench. Franko finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Defensively, he had a plus-minus rating of 32. Franko was 9 for 11 from the field. Through four conference games this season, Franko commandingly leads the Atlantic East with a field goal percentage north of 83 percent.

Two of his teammates provided double digit performances. Jason Holman scored 17 points. Trevor Seitz also had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Coming into Saturday's game ranked second in NCAA Division III with 21.6 assists per game, Marywood had 27 helpers. In addition to Franko's six, Corey Perkins and Seitz had five and four assists, respectively.

Marywood had a 45-32 advantage in rebounds over the Cavaliers. The Pacers end a two-game losing streak in the series history against Cabrini.

Cabrini received 21 points from Aquil Stewart. Ahmadu Sarnor had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Pacers never trailed in the contest.

Marywood looks to continue its success Wednesday with a 6 p.m. non-conference game against Central Pennsylvania College at the Insalaco Arena.
