Marywood Falls Short to Saints in Fifth OT of the Season

Arlington, Va. — Marywood University came up short in its fifth overtime of the season on Saturday in Atlantic East Conference men's basketball action. The Pacers fell to Marymount University 80-73 in overtime.

Mason Mendygral led the Pacers with 16 points. Mendygral finished with four 3-pointers.

Cole Johnson provided 13 points. Brendan Franko totaled eight points and seven rebounds.

Leading NCAA Division III in assists, Marywood was two short of its season average with 19 helpers. The Pacers were 13 of 35 (37.1 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Pacers forced overtime after trailing by double digits with less than five minutes in regulation. Facing a 62-52 deficit, Marywood outscored the Saints 12-2 the rest of the way.

Trevor Seitz started a 10-point run with a 3-pointer at 4:06. On the next possession, Franko made another long-ranged shot to make it a four-point game. Vigil cut the deficit to two (62-20) on a layup from Brandon Reed. Vigil made a jump shot in the paint to even the score with 2:07 left.

Marymount and Marywood traded layups. The Saints' Jack Bifano ended the Pacers' run on a Marcus Beckett, and Reed responded with one at the other end. Neither team scored in the last 90 seconds.

In overtime, the Saints took an early lead with a pair of Wyatt Hockenberry free throws. Jason Holman supplied Marywood with its first lead since the opening half with a 3-pointer on a Mendygral assist. After a free throw tied the game, Marywood took a two-point lead on a Reed jumper. Marymount had an eight-point run that was capped by back-to-back Marcus Stubbs 3-pointers.

The Pacers were able to move within one possession on a pair of Seitz free throws with 26 seconds left. Marymount made both of its attempts to seal the victory.

Marymount had four players in double figures. Beckett provided 17 points. Stubbs' four 3-pointers help add to 16 points. Hockenberry totaled 15 points. Bifano had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Marywood will welcome Immaculata University on Wednesday evening.
