Men's Basketball Comes Just Short of Comeback

Marywood doles out 19 assists to stay in national lead

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University's valiant comeback from 18 points down with less than a half remaining fell short to Immaculata University 83-80 Monday in Atlantic East Conference men's basketball action. The Pacers have lost six games by either a possession or in overtime.

Jason Holman finished with a team-high 17 points. Caleb Vigil finished with 16 points off of the bench. Brendan Franko added 15 points.

Trevor Seitz had an all-around effort with 11 points, six assists, seven rebounds and three assists. Mason Mendygral scored 12 points.

Leading NCAA Division III in assists per game, Marywood held on to its national lead with 19 assists, two short of their season average.

It was a box score of contrasts. Immaculata committed 28 turnovers to the Pacers' 12. Marywood had a 29-17 points off turnovers advantage. The Macs shot 51.9 percent for the game to the Pacers' 33.8 percent mark. Immaculata had a 46-29 rebounding; however, the Pacers led 18-11 in second-chance points.

Immaculata's Tyler Tillery scored a game-high 20 points. John Proctor finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. Keith Farmer tallied 15 points.

Marywood trailed by as 18 points just beyond the midway point of the first half.  Vigil trimmed the lead to two possessions with a 3-pointer from Seitz with 2:02 remaining. After a Macs bucket at the other end, Mendygral made a layup and scored an and-1 to make it a five-point game (75-71).

The Pacers had a chance to erase a seven-point deficit in the last 13 seconds. Mendygral again brought it down to four points (81-77) when he swished a long-ranged shot from a Holman assist. On an inbounds play, Immaculata coughed it up to Franko. Holman made both free throws to cut the deficit to two. On the next inbounds play, the Mighty Macs similarly give it away to Franko, and Brandon Reed drew a hard foul on the base line. Mendygral made one of two free throws that cut the game to one. Immaculata's Brandon Perez made both free throw attempts, and Franko's last-chance 3-pointer was unable to find the basket.

Marywood will be back in the Insalaco Arena in two days when it hosts Neumann University on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
