Marywood Holds Off Neumann for Upset Victory

The Pacers earn their first win over Neumann since 2020

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University took down the defending Atlantic East Conference men's basketball champions with a 73-69 upset victory over Neumann University on Wednesday. The Pacers beat the Knights for the first time since 2020.

Jason Holman led the Pacers with 16 points and nine rebounds. Brendan Franko scored a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Trevor Seitz tallied 14 points. Caleb Vigil reached double figures with 10 points.

The Pacers received solid efforts from Mason Mendygral (8 points-9 rebounds) and Cole Johnson (8 rebounds-3 blocks).

Marywood had a lead as large as 12 in the second half. Neumann tied the game up at 56-56 on a Tony James put-back with 9:36 remaining. Leading by one, Marywood stretched its lead to five on a pair of Holman free throws and a Franko jumper.

Neumann cashed in on 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions. Ryan Starr made a long-range shot with 1:10 remaining to cut the Pacers lead to 70-69. Trevor Seitz followed with a layup in the pain from a Caleb Vigil pass with 38 seconds left.

On the next possession, Johnson stole the ball. A missed front end of a one-and-one gave Neumann possession with a chance to even the score. Mendygral grabbed a defensive rebound and made a crucial free throw to make it a two-score game (73-69). Holman made two defensive rebounds in the last eight seconds to thwart the Knights.

Marywood was one shy of its nation-leading season average with 19 assists.

Starr neared a triple-double with 13 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Jalen Vaughns had a game-high 18 points and eight boards.

Marywood scored well-needed second-chance points late in the game, finishing with a 17-12 advantage in the box score.

The Pacers (9-12, 2-6) hit the road to take on Cabrini University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
