Men's Soccer Puts In Three Set Pieces to Sink Cavaliers

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University perfected the art of the free kick in a 3-1 victory over Cabrini University Saturday in rainy Atlantic East Conference men's soccer action. The Pacers beat the Cavaliers for the first time since 2017 to end a five-game losing streak.

Eli Benitez and Seth Blakiewicz each scored their first career goals. Matt Laudenslager had his third goal of the season.

Fifty-five seconds into regulation, Benitez drilled a shot from 22 yards out that went into the right side of the net.

Cabrini countered in the 15th minute. On a ball played from the left perimeter of the box from John Ameyaw, Nolan Holloway drilled a shot from the center of the box past the keeper and into the left side of the net.

In the 68th minute, Laudenslager fired a shot from 30 yards out from the left perimeter. Laudenslager's game-winning goal found the upper-left corner of the goal to take a 2-1 lead.

Marywood added to its goal total in the 75th minute. On another free kick, Rodolfo Vargas slid a ball to Blakiewicz, executing a 25-yard shot into the left side of the frame.

Alex Russo made three saves for the win.

Cabrini edged the Pacers 8-7 in shots. Both teams put four attempts on frame. The Cavaliers had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Marywood (6-8, 1-2 AEC) ends a three-game slide with its first win in the month of October. The Pacers are currently tied for fifth place with Gwynedd Mercy in the Atlantic East standings.

The Pacers will travel to Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday.
