Volleyball Overpowers Cyclones in Four Sets

Marywood evens conference record to 2-2

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University held off Centenary University in four sets on Wednesday to even its Atlantic East Conference volleyball record. The Pacers are now 8-18 on the season with a 2-2 mark in conference play. 

Marywood won by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20. 

Casey Hagerstrom led the Marywood offense with 15 kills and a .406 attack percentage. Hagerstrom also finished with three aces and a block assist for 18.5 points. 

Mikayla Meek and Libby Smith each had 14 points. Meek sported 12 kills with a .233 hitting percentage. Libby Smith provided 10 kill;s and four aces. 

Jaedyn Laws garnered 39 assists and 11 digs in addition to three aces. Gianna Norton held down the back line with 26 digs. Priscilla Newton had nine digs. 

Centenary's Poppy Skjonnemand tallied 20 kills and a .275 hitting percentage. 

The Cyclones (9-6, 1-3 AEC) dominated the front line wth a 9-3 advantage in blocks. Marywood had a 51-34 advantage in kills. Defensively, the Pacers relied on a 80-59 advantage in digs. 

In the first set, Marywood won the first six points on Laws serves. The Pacers went ahead 9-2 on a Bethany Burns kill. Centenary went on a 10-1 run to take a 12-10 lead. Meek tied the set on an ace, and Karli Boyer gave the Pacers a 14-12 advantage on back-to-back kills. Centenary moved within 22-21 on a ball-handling error. Marywood won the last three points. Meek had consecutive kills, and Norton notched the set on an ace. 

In the second set, Boyer had points on four out of five Pacers' points to help them take a 22-18 lead. Hagerstrom helped close the set with consecutive kills. 

A seven-point Cyclones run spoiled the Pacers in the third set. 

Marywood trailed 13-10 in the fourth on a Skjonnemand kill for the Cyclones. The Pacers responded by taking eight of the next nine points. Hagerstrom evened the score and took the lead on consecutive kills. Meek had the match point on a Laws kill. 

The Pacers head to Marymount University to take on the Saints and Bridgewater University on Saturday.
