Pacers Advance in AEC Tournament, Down Griffins 3-0

Marywood dominates in second half

Scranton, Pa. — Third-seeded Marywood University won its first postseason men's soccer game in eight years. The Pacers defeated sixth-seeded Gwynedd Mercy University 3-0 on Saturday in the Atlantic East Conference first round. 

It marks Marywood's first playoff win since defeating Cabrini University during the 2015 playoffs. With the victory, the Pacers will continue on to face No. 2 Cabrini University on the road in the semifinals.

Alex Visha finished with a goal and an assist.

The first half presented many opportunities for both sides, although no goals were scored. The score remained knotted at 0-0 heading into the second half of play. Marywood opened the second stanza inches away from a goal when Jared Sanborn pinged the top woodwork in the 47th minute.

Marywood struck first in the 57th minute with a put-back goal from Hayden Slater, assisted by Visha. The tally put the Pacers up 1-0. It was Slater's first career goal. 

In the 73rd minute of play, Visha added to the Marywood lead with his first career goal. On a Kyle Falcon ball that split defenders, Visha beat the goalie over the top. 

Danny Gomez netted a magnificent ball from Jack Forbes, who got it over the Griffin defense to set Gomez up in the 88th minute, putting the Pacers up 3-0. 

Marywood recorded 23 shots in total, with eight being on goal, while Gwynedd Mercy was able to record six total shots, one of which were on goal. 

The Pacers won the corner kick battle by a 6-1 margin. 

Alex Russo had one save on the day for his fifth clean sheet of the season. The Griffins' keeper John Wagner recorded five saves.
