Women's Soccer Makes Seventh Straight Conference Final

Josie Sorce nets eight points with two goals and four assists

Scranton, Pa. — Top-seeded Marywood University sent sixth-seeded Gwynedd Mercy home en route to a 7-0 victory Tuesday in the Atlantic East Conference women's soccer semifinals. The Pacers will host their fifth straight Atlantic East final and seventh consecutive conference championship game. 

Marywood will take on second-seeded Marymount University in the final on Saturday at a time to be determined.

Josephine Sorce was magic for the Pacers with two goals and four assists. She moved into a tie for second all-time in single-season assists with her 17th of the year. 

Riley Mulherin provided the Pacers with two goals and an assist. Mulherin is currently tied for third all-time in single-season goals with her 21st of the 2023 campaign. 

Hailey Dwyer had a career day with a goal and an assist. Prior to today, the junior defender never registered a single point throughout her career.

In the 17th minute, Kate Kollar-Dye showcased her tenacity for postseason glory to put the Pacers ahead. Off a Sorce corner kick, Kollar-Dye tapped in a shot from 14 yards out that found the right side of the net. 

Two minutes later, Dwyer registered her first assist of the season. Mulherin knocked in a shot from 13 yards out after Dwyer played a ball back after a save on her previous attempt. Dwyer circled to the ball and played it back to Mulherin for the strike. 

Sorce assisted a pair of goals in a 23-second span in the 30th minute. She delivered a ball to the left side of the box from the right perimeter. Mulherin drilled the shot from 17 yards out. Moments later, Carly Walters tallied a goal sourced from Sorce for a 4-0 lead. 

She etched her name twice into the goals column in the second half. In the 50h minute, Mulherin played a ball through from the midfield, setting up a one-on-one situation that resulted in Sorce connecting on a goal from 16 yards out. At the 84-minute mark, Sorce scored on a set piece just outside of the 18-yard box. 

Dwyer registered her first career goal in the 87th minute to seal the victory. Dwyer tapped in a shot from the left side. Mulherin delivered a cross from the right flank into the center of the box. Sorce's shot was thwarted by the keeper, and Dwyer rushed in to punctuate the win. 

Marywood (9-6-2) outshot the Griffins by a 44-4 margin with a 21-2 figure on shots on target. The Pacers had six corner kicks to the Griffins' zero. 

Mila Elash made a pair of saves for preserve her fourth clean sheet of the season. The Griffins (7-5-6) had 14 saves from Madisson Ronn. 

Marywood won the Atlantic East championships in 2018 and 2022. The Pacers won Colonial States Athletic Conference titles in 2008 and 2016.
