Men's Basketball Rolls to Electric City Opening Win

Five players in double figures propel Pacers to 106-90 win

Scranton, Pa. - An early 7-0 deficit diminished quickly and Marywood University rolled to a 106-90 win over visiting Central Penn College Friday evening in the opening game of the 2023 Electric City Classic.

The 106 points are the most the Pacers scored since they defeated The King College (NY) 107-46 in last year's ECC opener. Marywood improved to 3-2 with the win and will take on the winner of tonight's second game between Manor College and SUNY ESF.

Marywood got double digit performances from Mason Mendygral (14), Andrew Quinn (13), Robert Van Brunt (12), Cole Johnson (12) and Brendan Franko (10). Central Penn was led by a game-high 17 from Quadere Allen and 12 from Jordan Strickland.

Down 7-0 early, Marywood rallied to take an 8-7 lead on a Corey Perkins lay-in. After trading buckets, the Pacers took a 10-9 lead on a pair of Franko free throws and never relinquished the lead. Up 12-11 with 13 minutes to go in the first half, Marywood extended their lead  with an 8-0 run over the next minute and a half.

The Pacers shot 51.4% from the floor (36-70) and 45.7 from long-range (16-35). they out-rebounded their guests, 42-34. Both teams had 14 turnovers. Central Penn would get the game to within five (28-23) with just under nine to go, but by halftime Marywood would double that advantage and go into the break up 49-39.

A 12-2 run to open the second half put the game out of reach. Marywood would lead by 20 (73-53) with 10 to play, and hit the century mark on a Jackson Kuranda driving layup with 2:33 to play.

Marywood's 26 assists are a season-high thus far.

Tipoff for tomorrow's championship game is 4:00 pm. The consolation game featuring Central Penn (0-4) and the loser of tonight's second game will begin at 2:00 pm.
