Men's Basketball Survives Opener with Second-Half Comeback Win

Brendan Franko leads Pacers with 23 points

Clarks Summit, Pa. — Marywood University came back from a 11-point halftime deficit to storm back for a 77-74 season-opening victory Wednesday in men's basketball. It is the second consecutive year that the Pacers began their season with a win.

Brendan Franko scored a team-high 23 points. Franko shot 9 of 16 from the floor.

Joining him in double figures were Andrew Quinn and Trevor Seitz with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Corey Perkins brought in nine rebounds with five assists.

Marywood won despite being outshot and outrebounded. The Defenders had a 47.6-to-36 percent advantage from the field. They had a distinct 47-37 favor in rebounds. Marywood committed half as many turnovers, giving away the ball just 10 times to the Defenders' 20.

Clarks Summit received a double-double from Isaiah Coleman with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

The Defenders led by as many as 15 points (49-34) in the opening minute of the second half. Over a six-minute span, Marywood went on a 20-2 run to take a 56-52 advantage. Franko made a game-tying free throw at 12:42 in the second half. Quinn gave Marywood a 54-52 lead on a layup following a Shilo Bivins rejection at the other end of the court.

Clarks Summit reclaimed the lead (61-60) on a Coleman jumper in the paint at 7:41. It was short-lived as Franko drained a 3-pointer with 5:18 remaining to go ahead 67-66.

Marywood did not relinquish the lead for the final five minutes. Leading by two points, Bivins hit a shot from long range for a 75-72 lead. Two offensive rebounds led to a Franko layup that extended the Pacers' lead to five with 1:28 left.

The Pacers had a 21-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Marywood heads across town to take part in The University of Scranton's tournament this weekend at the Long Center. The Pacers will take on Farmingdale State in the opening round Friday at 6:00pm. Marywood will take on the winner of Scranton and FDU-Florham on Nov. 11. The Pacers have not faced the Royals since the 2003-04 season.
