Marywood Bullpen Locks Down Lasers for Doubleheader Sweep

Ft. Pierce, Fla. — Marywood University baseball swept a doubleheader against Lasell College Thursday during its Spring Break trip. The Pacers defeated the Lasers by scores of 9-6 and 6-3.

Marywood improved its record to 6-3 on the season.

Game 1: Marywood 9, Lasell 6

Vinny D'Auria and Max Slusser produced run-scoring hits in the fourth and fifth innings to lift Marywood to a come-from-behind victory.

Trailing 5-3 in the top of the fourth, D'Auria evened the score with a two-run single to centerfield that scored Joey Galantini and Joey Yannelli. Slusser drove in Slusser for the go-ahead victory. James Myers singled to left field to score Slusser and extend Marywood's lead to 7-5

After J. Whitby brought Marywood's lead back down to one in the next inning, D'Auria and Slusser came through again. D'Auria hit a single to right field that brought home Joseph Bruno for a 8-6 lead. Slusser had a sacrifice fly that allowed Christian Michak to score the last Marywood run.

D'Auria finished 2 for 4 from the plate with three RBIs. Slusser was 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs. Michak had the lone extra-base hit with a double.

AJ Jordan earned his second victory of the season. He went 1 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run and three hits. The back end of the Marywood bullpen continued to impress this Spring Break. Matthew Klipple struck out two in a scoreless sixth. Tyler Quick earned his second save of the season with a shutdown inning.

Game 2: Marywood 6, Lasell 3

A four-run first inning provided the Pacers with enough cushion to close the doubleheader sweep.

Michak opened the game with a base hit to left center. He used his aggression on the base paths with a stolen base and advanced to third on an errant throw. D'Auria drove in the first run with a single to right-center and advanced with a stolen base and a passed ball. Giannetti's RBI fielder's choice doubled Marywood's lead to 2-0. Marywood scored its last run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Lasell chipped away at Marywood's lead with runs in the second and fourth innings. The Lasers took advantage of a fielding error to come within 4-2.

In the sixth inning, Marywood doubled its lead. Michak reached with a one-out walk and stole second base. Following an Adam Ginsberg walk, D'Auria hit an RBI ground out. Slusser singled to left field to score Ginsberg, and he was thrown out on an outfield assist to end the inning with a 6-2 lead. Lasell added a run in the bottom of the sixth on D. Egan's RBI single.

Aaron Gutierrez sat down the Lasers' side in the seventh for his first save.

Danny Tiedemann recorded the win. He allowed one earned run in four innings. The Pacers' bullpen yielded just three hits and one run in three innings of work. Aidan Dolan tossed a scoreless fifth. Danny Becker held on to the lead for a hold in the sixth. Gutierrez secured a save with one strikeout.

Offensively, D'Auria was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. AJ Kuzior and Chris Thomas were both 2 for 4. Michak scored twice with three stolen bases.

Marywood will play Kenyon College and Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) on Friday.
