Marywood Struggles in Atlantic East Opener at Centenary

Hackettstown, N.J. — Marywood University was doubled up by Centenary University 12-6 Friday in the Atlantic East Conference baseball opener. After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Cyclones scored seven unanswered runs in the opening three innings.

Vinny D'Auria and Max Slusser drove in five of the Pacers' six runs. D'Auria went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, stolen base and a run. Slusser doubled as part of a 2 for 5 effort with two RBIs.

In the bullpen, AJ Jordan threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Brett Kugler retired two batters.

Marywood (7-7) opened with a run in the top of the first. Christian Michak led off with a walk and a stolen base. D'Auria singled in the run with a shot to left field.

Centenary took advantage of a pair of Marywood errors as part of a four-run first inning.

The Pacers put themselves in position for a comeback with a four-run sixth inning. With the bases loaded, D'Auria singled to left field to score Danny Tiedemann and Joey Galantini. Max Slusser cleared the bases with a double to left field that cut the deficit to 8-6.

Marywood stayed within two runs until Centenary scored four in the bottom of the eighth.

The series continues on Sunday in a Atlantic East doubleheader at Marywood. The Pacers host the Cyclones at noon.
