Late-Inning Rally Closes Out Sweep in Home Opener

Marissa Gregory earns win in both games

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University rallied in the fifth and sixth innings to close out a sweep of Cazenovia College Friday in its home softball opener. The Pacers blanked the Wildcats 8-0 in five innings before pulling out a 6-3 victory.

Freshman Marissa Gregory earned the win in both games. Over the two games, Gregory allowed four hits and no earned runs. She struck out 12 in eight innings.

In the two games, Ashdon Clark went 6 for 6 with three runs, three RBIs, three doubles and a walk.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Marywood benefited from an infield error. After Emma McNally walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Gregory hit a ball to the right side of the infield that went off the second baseman's mitt and into the outfield.

Gregory stranded a runner at second base with a pair of swinging strikeouts to close the sixth. In the bottom half of the inning, Marywood put a runner on base on another infield error. Ashdon Clark singled to left field to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Samantha Baltrusaitis doubled to left center to score Tori Para and give Marywood a 4-3 lead. Emma McNally and Jessica Hanley hit back-to-back RBI singles to expand the lead to 6-3.

Cazenovia put the tying run at the plate in the seventh. Olivia Simone singled to left center to bring runners at the corners. Gregory struck out the final batter to secure the win.

Sam Ferrara made her first home start. She allowed one earned run in four innings.

In the nightcap, Clark reached four times. She went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and a double. McNally finished with two RBIs. Para hit a triple and scored a pair of runs.

In the opener, Baltrusaitis hit her first home run of the season. Baltrusaitis was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Brooke McKay finished 2 for 2 with two runs and a double. Abbey Stalter drove in a pair of runs, and Emily Rose was 2 for 2 with a double, run, RBI and a stolen base. Clark went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two doubles.

Marywood opens the Atlantic East Conference schedule Sunday afternoon against Marymount.
