Freshmen Lead Pacers Past Montclair State

Montclair, N.J. — Freshmen Avery Meighan and Kaitlyn Smith led the Marywood University women's lacrosse team to its seventh win of the season with a score of 18-5 over Montclair State University Wednesday. Meighan is fresh off the Atlantic East Conference weekly honor roll.

Meighan finished with seven goals, one assist, and three draw controls. Smith tallied five goals, and 12 draw controls. 

The Pacers had an early 2-0 lead over the Red Hawks. Meighan scored the first goal of regulation off an assist from Natalie Yilanjian. Smith quickly followed with a free position goal. Montclair's Joelle D'Angelo scored unassisted to cut the lead in half. Meighan tacked on her second of the game to put the Pacers ahead by two goals. The Red Hawks had three unanswered goals to put Montclair ahead 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Just one minute into the second, Meighan found the back of the net to notch the game at four a piece. Emma Solomon found the back of the net for her first of the game and gave the Pacers the lead. Meighan followed with a goal on a woman-up opportunity. Smith scored back-to-back goals to put the Pacers ahead 8-4. Yilanjian closed out the first half with her first goal of the game on another woman-up opportunity. 

The Pacers outscored the Red Hawks by a 6-1 margin in the third quarter. Olivia Stollsteimer found the back of the net on a free position shot to earn her first of the game. Meighan, Solomon, and Smith contributed to the third quarter lead. Samantha Rothman broke up the scoring with two minutes left to trail 15-5. 

The final quarter of regulation was dominated by the Pacers, as they outscored the Red Hawks 3-0. Yilanjian earned her second of the game six minutes into the quarter. Meighan followed just two minutes later. Kortney Harry closed out the scoring on a woman up opportunity to secure the victory.

Yilanjian tallied four points on two goals and two assists, while Solomon contributed two goals. Harry and Stollsteimer each tallied one goal.

Emily Dyminski made six saves.

Marywood out shot Montclair State by a 28-19 margin.

The Pacers will host Cabrini University Saturday for the first Atlantic East matchup of the 2023 season.
