Gregory Flirts with Another No-Hitter, Leads Pacers to Home Split

Gregory finishes with 12 2/3 consecutive hitless innings

Scranton, Pa. — Four days after throwing a perfect game, Marywood University freshman Marissa Gregory took a no-hitter into the sixth inning to lead the Pacers to a split against Neumann University Sunday in Atlantic East Conference softball action. The Pacers defeated the Knights 7-0 in the opener and fell 3-1 in the tail end of the doubleheader.

The split further complicates the Atlantic East standings. Marywood (16-7, 5-3) remains in first place with a tiebreak over Centenary. The top five teams in the conference each have three losses.

Neumann pinch-hitter Alyssa Celi ended Gregory's no-hit bid with a hard-hit ground ball through the right side. Taylor Portzline found open real estate for a base hit in the seventh inning. Celi's hit ended Gregory's streak of 12 2/3 hitless innings dating back to April 3.

Gregory earned her 10th victory of the season with a two-hit complete game effort. She allowed two walks and struck out six.

Offensively, Mara Hamm batted 5 for 6 with three RBIs over the two games. She reached seven times with a walk and a hit-batsman.

Game 1: Marywood 7, Neumann 0

In the second inning, the Pacers plated three runs after a leadoff Brooke McKay walk. Tori Para reached on a fielding error. Abbey Stalter singled a ball up the middle that bounced off of second base to take a 1-0 lead. Hamm singled through the right side to score both Para and Stalter for the 3-0 lead.

After both teams combined for five straight three-up, three-down frames, Hamm engineered a run in the fifth. She had a one-out single up the middle before being replaced for pinch runner Alex Dusman. Ashdon Clark doubled over the center fielder's head to score Dusman.

Marywood put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning. McKay led off with her second walk of the game. Sam Baltrusaitis put down a bunt that was thrown into the outfield and scored McKa. With bases-loaded, Emily Rose drove in two runs with an opposite field single.

Stalter batted 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Rose had two RBIs, and Hamm reached four times with two singles and two RBIs.

McKay walked and scored twice.

Game 2: Neumann 3, Marywood 1

Neumann scored two runs in the first inning and held on the rest of the way. Marywood left nine runners on base.

Neumann was finally able to get on the board in the first inning of game two. With one out, Cioni Simmons hit an infield single and stole second. After moving to third on a groundout, Portzline drove her home with an RBI single to right. Shire hit a base hit to left, moving Portzline to second. Maddie Tice followed with an RBI single to left-centerfield and the Knights had a 2-0 lead.

Marywood left the bases loaded in the first and fourth innings.

The Pacers put their only crooked number on the scoreboard in the fourth. McKay led off with a single through the right side. After Jessica Hanley loaded the bases with a single, Hamm beat out an infield single for the Pacers' lone run.

Marywood threatened in the bottom of the seventh with the tying run on base. Hamm singled up the middle. Pinch runner Dusman beat out a fielder's choice at second base. Neumann forced a foul out to first base and a pop up to second base to finish the game.

Hamm took the loss, allowing three earned runs in nine innings. Hamm struck out four. She led offensively with a 3 for 4 performance and the lone RBI.
