Aronica Pitches Gem to Take Down Cabrini in Split

Marywood ends an 11-game slide vs. the Cavs

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University pitcher Michael Aronica handcuffed the Cabrini University bats to lead the Pacers to their first win over Cabrini University since 2017. The Pacers split the Atlantic East Conference baseball doubleheader to end an 11-game losing streak versus the Cavaliers.

Marywood won the opening game 5-0 before falling 12-2 in the nightcap.

Aronica (1-2) allowed no earned runs across six innings pitched. He struck out 10 Cavaliers and allowed just three hits and two walks. Matthew Klipple made a scoreless relief appearance to contribute to the combined shutout.

Joey Galantini and Adam Ginsberg each went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Joseph Bruno (West Scranton) finished 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI.

The Pacers spoiled Division I transfer Pat Toal's perfect game by stringing together four hits in a five-run fifth inning. Max Slusser broke up the perfecto with a base hit up the middle to lead off the frame. AJ Giannetti walked, and AJ Kuzior laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position.

Bruno put the first crooked number on the scoreboard with an RBI single to the right side that caromed off of the first baseman's mitt. Galantini kept the lines moving with a double to deep center that cleared the bases and increased the score to 3-0. Danny Tiedemann walked to chase Toal out of the game.

Marywood added two more to its production in the fifth. Ginsberg singled to right center that drove in both Christian Michak and Galantini for a 5-0 lead.

Klipple preserved the shutout, stranding runners at the corner with a ground out to Bruno to end the game.

Cabrini benefited from fielding errors in the second game. The Cavaliers boosted to a 7-0 lead thanks to a pair of earned runs.

The Cavaliers' starting pitcher Blake Weinstein (3-0) did not allow a run until in six innings of work. Marywood did not break what would have been a series full of three shutouts with two runs in the eighth.

Ginsberg went 2 for 4 with a walk. Slusser saw three free passes with one run scored. Bruno and Tiedemann were both 2 for 4 with a double.

Max Ryan threw four innings, allowing one earned run with six strikeouts. Danny Becker tossed a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Derrick Ricci-Riner retired his only batter faced.

Marywood (10-11, 2-4) returns to Pacer Park on Monday against Penn State Brandywine at 3 p.m. The Pacers travel across town to University of Scranton's Volpe Field to take on Clarks Summit. Marywood closes out the week with a home doubleheader against Gwynedd Mercy on Thursday.
