Hamm Silences Macs Again as Pacers Go Deep in Opener for Atlantic East Sweep

Mara Hamm ties single-season shutouts record

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University swept Immaculata University to complete the Atlantic East Conference softball schedule. With at least two more games played than the rest of the conference, the Pacers will wait to see if Marymount University or Cabrini University suffers a loss in their remaining series to determine whether they will host a pod in the playoffs.

Marywood edged the Mighty Macs 3-1 in the opening game before strolling to an 8-0 shutout in five innings.

With the wins, Marywood wins its 20th game of the season for the 13th time in program history. Excluding the pandemic-impacted years, Pacers have won 20-plus games in two of Coach John Butash's three full-length seasons.

Senior Becca Zayla coordinated a Morgan's Message Day to help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics.

Game 1: Marywood 3, Immaculata 1

Tori Para hit her first career home run to lead Marywood to a victory that secured its place in the playoffs. Para hit a solo shot in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Ashdon Clark scattered three hits with a run and an RBI. Clark hit her sixth home run of the season and 11th of her career.

Sam Baltrusaitis went 2 for 3. Jessica Hanley reached safely three times with two singles and a walk.

Marissa Gregory (11-1) allowed just an earned run in a complete game. She allowed eight hits and struck out six.

Immaculata scored its lone run of the game in the third inning to even the score. Sara Rose grounded out to short to score Bryele Antony.

Marywood (20-12, 8-4) reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third. Clark hit a solo home run of her own to left field.

The Pacers added an insurance run in the fourth. Hanley led off with a single up the middle. Mara Hamm hit a single to right field that advanced pinch runner Alex Dusman. Emily Rose's fielder's choice resulted in a throwing error that brought home Dusman for the 3-1 lead.

Game 2: Marywood 8, Immaculata 0 (5 inn.)

Mara Hamm (8-7) tied a school record with her fifth shutout of the season. Hamm ties the single-season shutout record set in 1989 by Lauri Schlauch.

Hamm allowed just three hits with one strikeout in a five-inning complete game.

It amplifies a trend of Hamm's success against the Mighty Macs. In three appearances against Immaculata, she has a 0.00 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched.

Ashdon Clark drove in four RBIs with a 2 for 3 performance at the plate.

Fresh off her first career home run, Tori Para hit two doubles to bring in a pair of RBIs. Abbey Stalter was 2 for 2 with two runs.

Both Hamm and Emily Rose scored twice.

Marywood broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Stalter beat out a bunt to lead off the inning, and Hamm walked to put a runner in scoring position. Rose singled on a bunt of her own, setting the stage for Clark's bases-clearing, bases-loaded double to right-center field.

Hanging on to a 3-0 lead, Marywood added another big inning in the fourth. Marywood loaded the bases on a Hamm free pass. For the second straight game, the Pacers scored on a result of a Rose fielder's choice that brought in Brooke McKay. Clark singled to right field that scored Stalter for a 5-0 lead. Para then hit a two-run double to right field, and Sam Baltrusaitis found a hole through the right side to take the 8-0 lead.

Marywood's contest versus Keystone College was postponed on Monday. The Pacers' next scheduled doubleheader is Saturday, April 29 versus Cedar Crest College.
