Unleash the Cannons! Outfielders Gun Down Three Knights at Home to Even Series

Matthew Klipple strands tying run in scoring position for the save

Boothwyn, Pa. — Marywood University's outfielders flexed their arms with three outfield assists that proved to be the difference in a 12-10 victory over Neumann University Monday in Atlantic East Conference baseball action. The Pacers' win over the Knights in a neutral site game at Maplezone Sports Institute Complex evens the series at one game apiece.

Matthew Klipple shut the door on a late Knights' comeback effort for his first save of the season. With the tying run at second base with one out, Klipple forced a pop fly and a fielder's choice to shortstop Adam Ginsberg to secure the win and halt the Pacers' five-game losing streak.

Right fielder Quinton Roma and center fielder Joseph Bruno combined to throw three Neumann runners out at home plate. Roma ended a scoreless fourth inning by throwing out Neumann's Nick Glebocki at home plate. Roma and Bruno put the brakes on a six-run Neumann inning in the fifth inning by tossing out runners at home on back-to-back plays. Catcher AJ Giannetti expertly applied the tag to finish with six putouts.

Both Bruno and Roma helped their team with their bats as well. Bruno batted 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs. He also contributed a double and a sacrifice fly. Roma drove in three RBIs with his lone hit of the game.

Marywood's left fielder Vinny D'Auria got in on the action with a 3 for 5 effort. D'Auria scored four times.

Christian Michak went 2 for 6 with three RBIs. Robert Egan tripled with a run and an RBI.

Klipple garnered the save with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Danny Tiedemann earned the win by allowing two earned runs in 2 2/3 innings.

After Neumann went ahead with a 2-0 lead in the first, Marywood scored nine unanswered runs.

The Pacers (13-22) took the lead in the second. D'Auria led off with an infield single, and James Myers found a hole through the left side. Bruno hit an RBI single to left center. After an Egan walk to load the bases, Roma tied the game with a fielder's choice to shortstop. Michak singled up the middle to score Roma and take a 3-2 lead.

Marywood hit the Knights with a barrage of four runs in the top of the third inning. D'Auria again kicked things off with a one-out single again to opposite field. After a walk and an error on a fielder's choice, Bruno knocked an RBI single. Roma drew a bases-loaded walk, and Michak hit another RBI single that scored two runs that increased Marywood's lead to 7-2.

The Pacers tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Giannetti had an RBI hit by a pitch, and Bruno slapped a sacrifice fly that scored D'Auria.

After Neumann gutted the Pacers' lead to just one with a six-run fifth inning, D'Auria ignited the Pacers' lineup once again. He singled up the middle, and Myers was hit by a pitch. Joey Yannelli placed a sacrifice bunt that moved runners into scoring position, setting up Bruno's double to left center that gave Maryood a 10-8 advantage.

Marywood gave itself a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. AJ Kuzior led off with a walk, and Egan found open real estate for an RBI triple. Roma hit a single up the middle to drive in Egan.

The game combined for 20 walks and five hits-batsmen.

Neumann will host the Pacers in a rubber match on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
