Pacers Prevail for Comeback Win on Opening Day

Marywood scored 11 straight points on Gianna Norton serves in the fifth set

Oswego, N.Y. — Marywood University came back to defeat Oswego State in five sets Friday on Opening Day. The Pacers defeatd the Lakers by scores of 26-24, 19-25, 13-25, 25-17, 15-6. 

In the deciding set, Marywood scored 11 unanswered points on freshman Gianna Norton's serves. 

Freshman Haley Hallman led the Pacers offensively with 12 kills and a .167 hitting percentage. 

Freshman Jaedyn Laws tallied a double-double with 16 assists and 13 digs. Norton had 32 of the Pacers' 80 digs, in addition to five aces. 

Casey Hagerstrom totaled four solo blocks. Mikayla Meek had 12 assists. 

Neither team could shake off the rust with the Pacers sporting a .019 attack percentage to the Lakes' .066. Marywood edged Oswego 80-76 in digs. Oswego led in kills (39-34), aces (14-12), blocks (10-5) and assists (35-33). 

Marywood holds a 2-1 advantage in the series history dating back to 2007. The Pacers defeated Oswego in three sets last season. 

In the first set, the Pacers avoided set point on a service error to even the score at 24-24. Libby Smith earned a go-ahead kill on a Meek placement. Laws tallied the set point on a Julia Strohn assist for the 26-24 win. 

The Lakers struck early in the second set, taking a 15-5 advantage on a double-block by Emily Zeisler and Georgia Farry. Marywood struggled in the third set too with a minus-.077 hitting percentage. 

In the fourth, Marywood saw its six-point lead dwindle to just one on a bad set. Holding onto a slim 18-16 lead, Marywood outscored the Lakers 7-1 throughout the rest of the set. Autumn Savitski had a kill to go ahead 23-17, and Meek delivered an ace. 

Hall punctuated the win with a kill for match point. 

Marywood remains Upstate to take on Wheaton College and Utica University on Saturday.
