Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pacers' Early Lead Not Enough to Stave off Saints in AEC Opener

Marywood holds Saints without a field goal for the first 5:51 of the game.

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University fell to Marymount University 84-70 on Saturday to open the 2024 calendar year and the Atlantic East Conference men's basketball schedule. Trailing by three at half, the Saints outscored the Pacers 48-31 in the second half.

Marywood (5-8, 0-1 AEC) opened the contest by holding Marymount without a field goal for the opening 5:52. In that time, the Pacers built up a 14-1 lead.

Brendan Franko led the Pacers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Franko went 7 for 14 from the field.

Trevor Seitz supported the Pacers with a 15-point effort. Shilo Bivins totaled 10 points with two blocks and two steals.

Austin Bausman was just a point and a rebound shy of a double-double with nine and nine, respectively.

Marymount (8-5, 2-0 AEC) benefited from a 23-point, six-assist performance from Montell Cooper. Wyatt Hockenberry and Marcus Beckett each tallied 18 points. Marcus Stubbs had 10 points.

The Pacers' lead stretched to a game-high 14 points when Bivins hit a 3-pointer to go ahead 22-8 with 10:56 remaining in the first half. The Saints methodically chipped away at the lead for the remainder of the opening stanza. A Cooper jumper with 25 seconds remaining put the Saints within one possession (39-26).

Marymount evened the score in the opening minute. Hockenberry squared the game at 39-39 at the 19:15 mark. Marywood briefly reclaimed the lead on a Bivins 3-pointer at 17:17. Both teams traded leads with the Pacers leading 46-44 on a Perkins steal and layup at 15:26.

Cooper gave the Saints the lead for good with an and-1 on the next possession.

The Pacers tallied 16 giveaways, allowing Marymount to hold a 23-9 advantage in points off turnovers. The Saints did not allow a second-chance point. The Saints went 21 of 26 from the line for an 80.8 percent clip.

Marywood looks to end a five-game losing streak and get into the win column in conference play with a Wednesday matchup at Immaculata.
