Women's Soccer Seals Fifth Straight No. 1 Seed

Marywood defense did not allow a single goal in October

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University captured its fifth consecutive No. 1 seed in the Atlantic East Conference women's soccer playoffs. The Pacers finished their regular season with an 8-0 win over Immaculata University. 

Marywood earned a first round bye in the Atlantic East playoffs. The Pacers will take on the winner between No. 4 Immaculata and No. 5 Gwynedd Mercy. 

The Pacers finish their regular season with a 13-3-2 overall and 5-0-1 conference record. Marywood records its eighth straight clean sheet. It did not allow a single goal during the month of October. 

Josephine Sorce finished with a goal and three assists. Riley Mulherin, Maura Kirkpatrick and Carly Walters each scored twice.

Marywood scored first in the seventh minute on a goalazo from Carly Walters. Walters hit a direct kick from the 30-yard line into the far top-left corner of the net. 

In the 11th minute, her sister Caroline Walters delivered a cross from the left sideline that evaded the goalkeeper and allowed Mulherin to punch it in for a goal. 

Kirkpatrick tallied her first in the 33rd minute. On a feed from Caroline Plank, Kirkpatrick made two moves with a defender on her back and turned for a goal from 12 yards out. 

Just a few minutes after entering the game, Yianna Mazzella made two touches on a Sorce corner kick and lifted into the net for her first of the season. It was Mazzella's second career goal and first since the 2022 season. 

Marywood had two goals in a 23-second span in the 64th minute. Sorce took a rebound off of a blocked cross and sent it into the upper frame of net. Sorce was tackled inside the box, and Mulherin scored a PK for a 6-0 lead. 

Carly Walters headed a Sorce corner kick for goal in the 69th minute. Sorce added her third assist when she fed Kirkpatrick a goal in the 79th minute. 

Genevieve Morrison made one save. Jenna Orr earned a combined shutout. Emily Guther stopped seven shots for the Macs. 

Marywood outshot the Mighty Macs 25-3 with a 15-1 advantage in shots on target. The Pacers blanked Immaculata 13-0 on corner kicks.
