Marywood Rolls Past Rutgers-Newark in Home Opener

McDonald drops 13 points in the first quarter

Scranton, Pa. – A dominant first half helped the Marywood University women's basketball team to a 77-67 victory over Rutgers-Newark on Thurday. The Pacers improve to 2-1 on the season. 

Rachel McDonald led the Pacers with 22 points. Olivia Ciullo finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Megan Cavoli provided 12 points and eight assists. 

Kendel Card added seven rebounds and 13 points. 

The Pacers went up 22-15 in the first quarter. Rachel McDonald accounted for 13 of the first quarter points. 

In the second quarter, Marywood's offense was on full display going 8-16 (50.0%) from the field, 3-4 (75.0%) from beyond the arc, and 7-8 (87.5%) from the charity stripe. 

The Pacers went into halftime with a 48-27 lead. 

In the fourth quarter, the Scarlet Raiders closed the gap working their way to be down by 6 with three minutes left to play. 

Faith Kendricks and Megan Cavoli each recorded a steal to help the Pacers secure a double-digit lead with 30 seconds remaining. 

Rutgers-Newark out-rebound the Pacers 47-38. 

Marywood tallied three more assists than the Scarlet Raiders, 18-15. 

The Pacers will continue home action on Saturday with a clash against Juniata College at 1 p.m.
