Women's Basketball Topples Juniata, 63-53

Megan Cavoli notches 18 points, six assists

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University triumphed over Juniata College 63-53 Saturday in women's college basketball. The Pacers improved to 3-1 for the first time since the 2022-23 season. 

Marywood defeated the Eagles in the first ever meeting between the two programs. 

Megan Cavoli scored a career-high 18 points. She added six assists and six rebounds. Cavoli went 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. 

Mia Blume contributed 10 points and eight rebounds. Olivia Ciullo was a point shy of a double-double with 14 rebounds and nine points to complement three steals on the defensive side of the court. 

Rachel McDonald and Stephanie Klemick each added nine points. 

Juniata was led by Haily Sherman's 12 points and seven rebounds. Laney Gerdich had 10 points. Steph Emert brought in nine rebounds. 

Marywood shot 39.3 percent from the field, holding the Eagles to a 28.4 percent mark. Juniata had a 26-16 advantage in points in the paint. 

The Pacers led by as many as seven (27-20) to start the third quarter. The Eagles quickly went on a six-point run, capped by a Haily Sherman tip-in to move within one point. Juniata tied and took the lead (34-31) on back-to-back Olivia Berg 3-pointers. It capped a 14-4 run with 5:19 left in the third. 

Marywood responded with nine straight points. Cavoli made a fastbreak jumper off a Finley Bittenbender feed with three minutes remaining in the third to reclaim the lead. Blume knocked down a 3-pointer to go ahead 40-34 with 37 seconds remaining.

Juniata cut the deficit to three (47-44) with a Bri Bodtorf bucket from Berg. McDonald ignited a 11-1 run that finished with three consecutive 3-pointers by Cavoli and Ciullo. 

Marywood looks to keep its momentum this week when it hosts Keystone College and Cairn University on Wednesday and Thursday.
