Penalty Shootout Victory Propels Pacers to Atlantic East Semifinal

Leibkuchler makes winning save to advance

Scranton, Pa. — The Marywood University men's soccer team hosted the first round of the AEC playoffs on Saturday afternoon. The fourth seeded Pacers were able to squeak out the victory over fifth seeded Centenary that ended in a penalty shootout.

Many Marywood opportunities came up short in the first half, as the clubs took a 0-0 draw into the half.

The stalemate would continue through the second half of play, as extra time was needed.

The teams went back and forth with chances through both the first and second periods of overtime, leading to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Marywood was first to shoot and got in the hole early, mounting all of the pressure on the back of their keeper, Niko Leibkuchler

After eight straight makes by the combined clubs, the Cyclones missed the shot that would have put the match away.

With this momentum swing, a Pacer score meant that a Leibkuchler save was all that was needed to send Marywood into the second round.

Leibkuchler made the save in the eighth round of penalties, as the team stormed the field to surround him.

Pacers to convert on penalties were Owen Clearwaters, Nolan Kozera, Alex Visha, Danny Gomez, Jack Forbes, Jeremy Ortiz, and Jared Sanborn

Marywood will advance to the semi-finals and take on host Marymount at 7pm on Wednesday.
