Marywood Triumphs over Neumann, 86-79

Brendan Franko scored a game-high 25 points

Scranton, Pa. -- Marywood University earned an emphatic 86-79 victory over Neumann University on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers moved into a tie for third place with the Knights in the Atlantic East Conference men's basketball standings.

Brendan Franko scored a game-high 25 points and six assists. Franko went 7 of 15 from the field and made 8 of 9 at the charity stripe. He finished the contest with a +16 plus-minute ratio.

Mason Mendygral finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Austin Bausman tallied 12 points, and Cole Johnson finished with 11.

Marywood honored seniors Declan McCarthy and Robert Van Brunt prior to the game.

Neumann (8-15, 6-4 AEC) was led by Jalen Vaughns' 24 points and 12 rebounds. Jarell Keel scored 14 points. Both Ja'bri White and TJ Lewis finished with 12 points apiece.

Trailing by as many as nine in the first half, Neumann reclaimed the lead on a Vaughns and-1 with 4:58 remaining in regulation. Following a Collin Himmelberg free throw, Trevor Seitz had a steal and passed it up court for a Mendygral layup to take a 72-71 lead. Both teams traded field goals with Mendygral adding an and-1 of his own for a 75-73 lead. Vaugns squared things away at 75-75 with a layup on a TJ Lewis feed.

Franko provided the well-needed spark, draining a 3-pointer from Mendygral at the 2:56 mark. Johnson worked his way around the paint and hit a turnaround jumper to go ahead 82-75 with less than two minutes remaining.

Neumann cut the deficit to 82-79 on Keel's free throws with 57 remaining. Marywood averted a high press and allowed Bausman to drunk on a Franko assist to stretch it to a two-possession lead. Corey Perkins closed the contest with two free throws.

Marywood (12-11, 6-4 AEC) won its third consecutive game for the second time this season. The Pacers defeated the Knights for the second consecutive season at the Insalaco Arena. Marywood has won five of the past six home meetings against Neumann.

The Pacers will play Gwynedd Mercy University Tuesday at the Insalaco Arena for a chance to move into the No. 2 position in the Atlantic East standings.
