Women's Lacrosse Edged in Season Opener

Marywood falls by three in Krista Strausser's coaching debut

Dallas Twp., Pa. -- Marywood University opened its 2024 season with a 15-12 loss to Misericordia University Tuesday night in non-conference women's lacrosse action. The Pacers were within two goals but the Cougars held them scoreless for the final three minutes. 

Despite the loss, Marywood outshot the Cougars by a 36-22 margin. The Pacers had a 27-19 advantage in shots on goal. They won 21 of 30 draw controls. Each team finished with 10 ground balls and 13 turnovers. 

Avery Meighan led the Pacers with six goals and an assist for seven points. Meighan corralled 11 draw controls. 

Natalie Yilanjian tallied three goals and an assist for four points. She also had two caused turnovers and five draw controls. 

Kaitlyn Smith had a pair of goals. Defensively, Tori Wilson caused two turnovers. 

In her debut, Jenna Scala made four saves. 

Misericordia (1-0) was heralded by Michelle Torzilli's six goals and two assists for eight points. Jordyn Jarrett and Rachel Shook each had hat tricks. Genevieve Montanye provided a goal and three assists. 

The Cougars' standout goalkeeper Natalie McKinney made 15 saves. 

It was head coach Krista Strausser's coaching debut. 

After starting with a three-goal deficit, Marywood evened the score with 4:30 left in the first half on a Yilanjian score from Meighan. Thirty seconds later, Smith gave the Pacers a lead.

Misericordia responded with three consecutive goals to take a 7-5 lead on Alicia Pileggi's score. 

Marywood made a late attempt at tying the game with two goals in a 44-second span. Kortney Harry scored from a Wilson feed at 3:51. Meighan tallied an unassisted goal with 3:07 left to move within two goals (14-12). 

The Cougars' Shook won the draw, and Scala made a save on her shot. Marywood failed to clear the ball, leading to a Delaney Campanella score that sealed the win for Misericordia. 

Marywood will take on Lycoming College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
