Pacers Come Out on Top in Season Opener

AJ Kuzior starts season with a two-hit effort

Auburn, N.Y. — Marywood University opened its baseball season with a 5-3 victory over Hobart College on Sunday. The Pacers and Statesmen played a neutral site game at the former home of the New York-Penn League's Auburn Doubledays.

AJ Kuzior led the way offensively for the Pacers. He went 2-4 (.500) on the day with two RBIs.

Hobart got on the board early with an RBI triple by Will Jones in the bottom of the first. The Statesmen extended their lead to 2-0 in the same inning after a fielding error allowed Jones to score.

Bats were quiet for both sides until the top of the fourth. Kuzior singled up the middle to score Adam Ginsberg, cutting the lead to 2-1. Later that inning, Nick Ruiz singled to right, allowing Vinny D'Auria to cross the plate to even the score at 2-2.

The Pacers jumped ahead 3-2 in the top half of the fifth. Max Slusser doubled down the left field line, scoring Adam Ginsberg. Slusser came around to score as well on a Kuzior single, putting Marywood in front 4-2.

Hobart got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Ty Gallagher that scored Nate Johnson to make it 4-3.

AJ Giannetti scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth to add a Marywood insurance run, stretching the lead back to two at 5-3.

AJ Jordan was credited with the save for the Pacers, and Charlie Hamm got the win in his collegiate debut.

The Pacers pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts.

Marywood tallied seven hits in the game, while Hobart had five.

Marywood will head to Ursinus College on Wednesday for its next matchup.
