Marywood Falls to Cabrini Despite Late Inning Rally

Pacers collect 14 hits

Scranton, Pa. – The Marywood University baseball team hosted the Cabrini Cavaliers on Friday in a high-scoring affair. The Pacers (17-9, 5-5 AEC) would go on to lose 16-13 to the Cavs (15-9, 7-3 AEC).

Cabrini began the scoring in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly, grabbing a 1-0 lead.

The Pacers were quick to answer as they tied up the game in the bottom of the first on a Vinny D'Auria single. Marywood went on to take the lead on a 2 RBI single from Tristan Gatchalain to take a 3-1 lead.

In the second, the Cavaliers regained the lead with a five run inning. A sacrifice fly and a walk knotted it back up at 3-3 before a bases clearing double off the bat of Zack Brook gave Cabrini a three run lead.

After a scoreless third, the fourth inning saw more Cavaliers cross the plate as they extended the lead to 10-3. Dustin Sutton and Ryan Dipper each blasted a two-run homer in the inning.

The fifth inning let Cabrini add more runs with a walk and a 2-RBI single allowed them to take a commanding 13-3 lead.

The Pacers were able to collect one back in the home half of the fifth as D'Auria scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the sixth, the Cavaliers put up another three-spot with a RBI single, a walk, and a RBI double, extending the lead to 16-4.

The Pacers responded in the bottom of the sixth with two runs of their own. A triple from Joel Ayers and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Adam Ginsberg got the score to 16-8.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Marywood tacked on three more runs on a bases-clearing double from Ginsberg to make it 16-11.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Pacers continued to rally as Ayers hit a sacrifice fly and Ginsberg collected an RBI single. This would make it 16-13, but the Marywood comeback would fall just short.

Joe Yannelli led Marywood with three hits and Ginsberg led in RBIs, as he notched five of them.

Five other Pacers also had multi-hit games, as Ayers, Ginsberg, D'Auria, Tristan Gatchalain, and AJ Giannetti each collected two hits a piece to add to the total of 14.

With split innings between five different pitchers, the staff would combine to concede 16 runs (13 earned) on 14 hits and 10 walks.

Charlie Hamm collected all three strikeouts for the Marywood staff.

Kai Cummings (6-3) picked up the win for the Cavaliers, while Marywood's Max Ryan (6-3) was credited with the loss.

The Pacers will look to bounce back on Saturday, as they travel to Cabrini for a double-header.
