Marywood Shuts Out Mules in Season Debut

Mulherin notches her first goal of the year

Scranton, Pa. — Riley Mulherin flawlessly flicked a corner kick lifted Marywood University women's soccer to a season-opening 1-0 victory over Muhlenberg College. The Pacers earned their first victory over the Mules in program history. 

Marywood's goal happened in the 19th minute. Mulherin headed a Josephine Sorce corner kick into the top right corner for the score. 

The early goal would go on to be the only score of the match. 

Marywood dominated almost every facet of the game, out-shooting Muhlenberg 20-4 with 14 of those shots being on-goal, compared to the Mules' three. 

Mulherin had four shots on goal. Maura Kirkpatrick and Caroline Walters each got two shots off, both being on target.

Sorce adds to her school record career assists record with 36. Among active leaders, Sorce currently ranks tied for second place in Division III with 36 assists. 

Coincidentally, Mulherin moves into a tie for fifth place all-time with 36 goals.

Mulhenberg had the slight advantage on corners, recording six to the Pacers' five. 

Genevieve Morrison and Jenna Orr split time in net for in their Marywood women's soccer debut, combining for three saves while recording a combined clean sheet. 

Megan Stairs tallied 13 saves on the day for the Mules. 

The Pacers will look to carry the momentum as they travel down to Lancaster on Wednesday for their next match against Lancaster Bible College.
