Mulherin's Hat Trick Drives Pacers to Victory

Marywood's goalies combine for fourth shutout on the season

Scranton, Pa. - On Wednesday evening, the Marywood University women's soccer team welcomed SUNY Canton for a non-conference matchup. In thrilling fashion, the Pacers (4-2-1) defeated the Kangaroos (1-4-2) by a score of 5-0.

Marywood wasted no time getting on the board, as Riley Mulherin located Josephine Sorce on a cross, just 19 seconds after the opening whistle. Sorce was able to finish the pass into the lower left corner to grab the 1-0 lead.

In the 14th minute, Mulherin tallied a goal of her own, splitting the defense and beating the keeper to extend the Pacer lead to 2-0. Sorce picked up the assist on a magnificent through-ball.

Sorce found Mulherin yet again in the 29th minute of play, as the pair combined for another tally.

Marywood was far from finished, as Brynn Stiles got in on the scoring. Stiles was able to get a head on a free kick off the boot of Caroline Plank. This 39th minute goal extended the Marywood lead to 4-0 before halftime.

In the 57th minute of the match, Sorce once again located an open Mulherin who beat a diving keeper and found the back of the net for the third time on the evening. The hat-trick from Mulherin made it 5-0 in favor of the Pacers.

Marywood keepers Genevieve Morrison, Kalie Fernandez-Naughton, and Jenna Orr combined for a save and preserved the shutout, the Pacers' fourth on the season.

SUNY Canton keeper, Skylar Williams, collected 18 saves in the match.

Marywood was able to get off 36 shots in total, with 23 of them being on goal. SUNY Canton recorded two shots, one on target.

Mulherin tallied three goals on eight shots, while also being credited with an assist.

Sorce had one goal on five shots, collecting three assists along the way.

The Pacers also had seven corners, while the Kangaroos had zero.

Marywood will look to carry this moment into their next match on Saturday, as they travel to Alvernia University.
