Scranton, Pa.— Fall 2025 bears historic significance for Marywood Esports. With the addition of Marvel Rivals and the program's first ever competitive Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Crews team, Marywood Esports started off a very full fall season with two Overwatch teams and the Rocket League team holding the line.
Overwatch Green and Overwatch Gold, both playing in the NECC, held a strong early lead in the season. Both teams were undefeated through their first four matches with Overwatch Gold only losing a single map to Waynesburg University. As both teams prepared to end their seasons strong, their battles became tougher. Marywood Gold fell to Edinboro University and Arcadia University Grey. Marywood Green took losses to the University of Ottawa's Garnet and Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Goats. In spite of this, Marywood Green still clinched a playoff spot, largely in part due to their strong four wins and high map differential from the beginning of the season.
Marywood Gold, however, had more fighting to do. With four wins and two losses, a loss to Wilkes University Blue would have put Marywood at the fourth seed, missing a playoff spot if Edinboro University were to upset Waynesburg. In a dominant fashion, Marywood Gold took a 3-1 victory over local rival Wilkes, sending the team up to third seed.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate faced a much rockier start, with a Week 1 loss to Edinboro as well. However, this turned out to be a momentary lapse for the SSBU roster, as the rest of the season would be an (almost perfectly) smooth push. SSBU only dropped one more match in a tight 1-2 loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene University Cougars C team.
"It's been wonderful to see how much they're helping each other grow in these first few weeks," said coach Brandon Grandinetti. "It's the first season we've had any kind of fighting game involvement in the program at all and here's our SSBU team making it to the playoffs! It's pretty clear we've got some strong players all around. I know they're going to keep growing really well as players. I couldn't be more proud of this team."
Marywood Green ultimately earned the fifth seed in the NECC Overwatch Division 4 playoffs. Marywood Gold claimed the No. 6 seed for Division 8, and Marywood SSBU would also earn the fifth seed in the Division 5 playoffs.
"I'm very proud of the work our players have put into this semester," says Overwatch coach Matthew Olaes. "I can't wait to see more as we start transitioning into Spring!"
Marywood's Rocket League team seeks to earn a spot in the ECAC Rocket League playoffs with the top 16 teams making it into the playoff bracket. With two matches to go, Marywood has yet to claim a spot.
Marywood's SSBU team will compete on Nov. 11 at 8:30pm, seeking to qualify for the top four in its playoff bracket.
