Overwatch Green, Gold Reach Finals; Marvel Rivals and SSBU Vying for Third Place

Scranton, Pa.- Those who say lightning never strikes twice have not seen Marywood University's Overwatch teams in action. After a stunning season, both Marywood Green and Marywood Gold have both earned a place in the finals match in their respective divisions (Div. 5 and Div. 7).

Marywood Gold took a 3-0 win over University of New Hampshire Chargers JV on Friday, 4/10, at the same time that Marywood Green earned a 3-0 win over the University of Georgia Red squad. This comes after both teams earned the No. 1 seed in their individual divisions, Marywood Gold not losing a single game throughout all of the matches in the season.

Marvel Rivals and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, two new additions to the Marywood Esports roster, both took losses on Tuesday, 4/7. Marywood SSBU would fall to Thomas More University Blue, and Marvel Rivals would drop to St. Clair University Saints. While a loss in the semifinals put both teams out of contention for a trophy, a third-place finish and the subsequent qualifying points for the Nationals competition is still on the table.

At the moment, both Overwatch teams and the Marywood SSBU team have qualified for the National Championships in the National Esports Collegiate Conference. While the qualifying points for the spring semester will not be fully tabulated until after the divisional finals, the three aforementioned teams should end up within the top 16 teams in their respective division, therefore qualifying for the National Championships.

Luis Morales is a support player for Marywood Green, joining the roster this spring after moving up from Gold. He speaks on his drive and work ethic: "The team's drive to win and become better together inspired me to do my best to improve as well. This finals appearance is a result of the hard work and dedication from every member of the team and coaching staff."

Marywood Green will play L'Université de Sherbrooke on 4/13 in the Division 5 finals, and Marywood Gold will play the College of the Holy Cross on 4/17 in the Division 7 finals.

Marywood SSBU will play Elon University Maroon and Marywood Marvel Rivals will play Marist University Red, both matches for third place on 4/14.
