Gatchalain Blasts a Pair on Opening Day Sweep

Max Slusser drives in six RBIs

Devon, Pa. — Sophomore Tristan Gatchalain hit a pair of home runs to lead Marywood University to a sweep over Rosemont College Saturday. The Pacers won by scores of 15-1 and 8-5 in their baseball season openers.

It is Marywood's first 2-0 start to a season since 2022.

Game 1: Marywood 15, Rosemont 1 (7 inn.)

Marywood scored at least three runs in each of the first four innings to earn a win over the Ravens.

Max Slusser led the Pacers with four RBIs. Slusser hit a bases-loaded double that drove in three runs in the second inning.

Gatchalain hit a three-run home run to give Marywood its first lead in the top of the first inning.

Joel Ayers went 3 for 5 with three runs and three RBIs. Evan Bruder reached five times in his Marywood debut.

Adam Ginsberg tripled and scored three runs. Christian Michak swiped two bases.

In a bullpen game, Caleb Fisher earned his first Marywood victory. Fisher allowed one earned run in two innings with two strikeouts.

Brett Kugler, Aidan Dolan, Michael Aronica, Adam Anderson and Ethan Reccek each pitched a scoreless inning.

Game 2: Marywood 8, Rosemont 5 (6 inn.)

In a shortened game due to darkness, Marywood came back from a four-run deficit to defeat the Ravens in six innings.

Slusser hit a pinch-hit go-ahead single that scored Gatchalain and Ethan Reccek in the fifth inning.

Trailing 5-2, the Pacers scored five runs in the fifth inning. Marywood loaded the bases with a Tanner Vicendese walk followed by Michak and Ayers singles. Gatchalain hit a one-out single to left field that scored two runs. After a walk loaded the bases, AJ Kuzior was hit by a pitch to even the score at 5-5.

Gatchalain was just a triple shy of a cycle with a 3 for 4 performance. Gatchalain drove in three RBIs and scored three runs. He hit his second home run of the day.

Ayers went 2 for 3 with a run. Michak scored twice with a run scored.

For the second straight game, Marywood's bullpen failed to allow a run. Owen Reilly got out of an early jam to throw 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Michael Conoscenti captured the win, allowing just a single. Charlie Hamm picked up a save in the sixth.

Ginsberg added an insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth.

Rosemont completed the first triple play in school history. In the sixth inning, a liner was caught by Lennon. Lennon threw to Peake to touch second base to catch the runner leaving early at second and tagging the runner at first.

The Ravens had three RBIs from Gerner.

Marywood is scheduled to host Penn State Brandywine on Saturday if field conditions are playable. The Pacers will host Alfred State in a neutral site doubleheader in Berwick, Pa. on Saturday.
