Pacers Hold On in Ninth to Stay Unbeaten

Marywood executes double play to end game

Aston, Pa. — Marywood University held off Penn State Brandywine for an 8-7 victory on Tuesday. The Pacers' baseball team remains undefeated through three games. 

With the tying run on first base, relief pitcher Owen Reilly forced a groundout to close the game for a save in the bottom of the ninth. Shortstop Tanner Vicendese tossed a Adam Ginsberg to first baseman Tristan Gatchalain for a game-winning double play. 

Gatchalain doubled twice as part of a 2 for 5 effort with three runs and an RBI. 

Both Ginsberg and AJ Giannetti drove in a pair of RBIs. Joel Ayers and Christan Michak had multi-hit games. 

Max Slusser led all Marywood hitters with three singles.

Caleb Fisher (2-0) secured the win in a bullpen game. Fisher threw two scoreless innings and allowed just one walk. 

Marywood jumped to a five-run lead in its first two sets of at-bats. Ayers and Gatchalain hit back-to-back doubles to put the first run in the first innings. Two batters later, Ginsberg doubled to right field for a 2-0 lead. Giannetti single for a 3-0 advantage. 

In the second innings, Marywood added two runs. Michak tripled to center field to drive in Nick Ruiz. Ayers hit an RBI single up the middle. 

After the Lions added one run in the third and fourth innings, Marywood responded in the fifth. Gatchalain led off with a double, and Slusser advanced him with a base hit. Ginsberg's sacrifice fly extended Marywood's lead to 6-2. 

The Pacers (3-0) posted two in the sixth inning. Tanner Vicendese reached on a hit by pitch and stole second place. Slusser hit a single to right field that extended the lead to 7-2. Marywood scored its eighth run on a bases-loaded Giannetti walk.

The Lions scored five unanswered runs in the last two frames. Nate Turner hit a leadoff home run to right field. The Lions benefited from a fielding error with a sac fly to move within four runs. 

In the ninth, Ryan Brown hit an RBI triple. After Turner drew his third walk, David Kursman cleared the bases with a two-run single that put the Lions within one run. Reilly came into relief and retired his lone batter faced. 

Marywood moves to a 6-2 all-time record versus Brandywine. 

The Pacers travel to their annual Fort Piece, Florida trip next week. Marywood will take on Westfield State University in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
