Marywood Rocket League Completes Playoff Hat Trick

Scranton, Pa. -- The National Esports Collegiate Conference, Eastern Collegiate Athletics Conference, and Playfly Collegiate are three of the most populated collegiate esports conferences in the nation. In January 2025, Marywood's Rocket League team set out on a mission to qualify for playoffs in all three conferences. Marywood's NECC run started tumultuously, taking 3 early season losses.

However, that marked a turning point for the squad, as the team earned four consecutive wins to launch themselves into the fourth seed in the RL Division IV East B stage.

In the ECAC, Marywood found themselves facing off against teams never competed against before. In Group 3 of Division A, Marywood would slowly climb their way to a 5-2 record, placing them at 19th seed going into playoffs. In a 32 team bracket, Marywood will have to continue to prove their dominance in the ECAC, a first time competition for the squad.

Playfly, formerly NACE Playfly, offers smaller divisions, but competition is just as steep.

Marywood, facing off against schools such as Temple University, Northern Michigan University, and University of Cincinnati would earn a second place finish. With a 5-2 record, Marywood has
secured a place in the playoffs.

Marywood's Rocket League team has solidified an overall record of 14-7 across all conferences this season, a stellar accomplishment for the roster. The team, composed of Austin Gagnon, Jakob Seamans, James Marsh, Jack Biggs, and Joe Taraschuk, has previously placed 2nd in the nation in the NECC Nationals competition, and repeatedly claimed 2nd place in both fall and spring divisions.

Rocket League Head Coach Austin Sienkiewicz shares his thoughts: "The players have really been putting in the effort to make the necessary adjustments to become a successful team. They've been grinding their mechanics and studying up on the game to always make sure we have an edge over teams." Sienkiewicz continues: "As we move forward, we plan to dive even deeper into strategy as a team while they work on their mechanics and make a deep run into playoffs."

With all the work the team has been putting in, it's no wonder that they've qualified for NECC, ECAC, and Playfly playoffs.

The next step for this team is going to be the ECAC Playoffs against Bethel University on Wednesday, March 26th.
