Volleyball Sweeps Opening Tri-Match

Mae Eddinger earns first wins at Marywood

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University opened the season with two straight wins for the first time since the 2021 season on Saturday. The Pacers earned three-set sweeps over Alvernia University and Penn State Schuyllkill in its opening day tri-meet. 

Alvernia defeated the Lions in four sets in the other tri-match. 

Mae Eddinger earned her first coaching victories at Marywodo. 

Match 1: Marywood 3, Alvernia 0

The Pacers earned their first win over Alvernia in 12 years. The Pacers ended a six-game slide against the Golden Wolves. 

Marywood defeated the Golden Wolves by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-9. 

Carolina Samaniego recorded 11 kills and seven digs in her collegiate debut. Both Taylor Hallam and Genevieve Pollock finished with seven kills. 

Catie Woolf had four aces and 13 digs. Andrea Fraga led the Pacers with 15 digs.

Marywood had six total blocks. Hallam finished with a team-best four block assists. 

Ayla Bransford recorded 25 assists. 

The Golden Wolves had six kills apiece from Olivia Rohrbaugh, Allison Wolf and Emma Remaley. Caroline Buggy recorded 20 digs. 

Trailing by a 21-20 score, Marywood tallied the final four points of the first set. Samaniego evened the score at 22-22. Both Bransford and Hallan blocked a shot to take a 23-22 lead. Samaniego followed with a kill. On set point, Gracee Work provided an ace. 

Match 3: Marywood 3, Penn State Schuylkill 0

Marywood glided to a 25-12, 25-21, 25-15 victory over the Lions. 

Hallam led the Pacers' offense with 11 kills. She finished with 14.5 total points with four total blocks and eight digs. 

Work had nine kills for a .240 attack percentage. She added eight digs as well. 

Woolf led the Pacers' defense with 19 digs. Bransford contributed 28 assists. 

In the second set, Marywood trailed 20-19 after a three-point Lions' run. Genevieve Pollock squared the score at 20-20 on a kill. Work gave the Pacers a 21-20 to set a four-point Marywood run in motion. After the Lions cut the lead to two (23-21), Marywood closed out the set with kills from Howard and Hallam.

Marywood hosts King's College on Saturday at 6 p.m.
