Men's Basketball Opens Year with Loss at Haverford

Haverford, Pa. – The Marywood University men's basketball team dropped a non-conference matchup on the road Friday afternoon, falling 110-60 to Haverford College.

The Pacers (7-5, 0-0 Atlantic East) struggled to contain a hot-shooting Fords squad (7-5, 0-0 Centennial) that pulled away early and never looked back.

Senior forward Michel Loftin led the Pacers with a team-high 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting, adding five rebounds and three steals in 29 minutes of action. Shilo Bivins contributed 11 points and five rebounds, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Collin Himmelberg chipped in eight points, while Ty Cheney added eight points off the bench, including a pair of threes.

Marywood showed flashes of resilience, particularly in the paint where they scored 36 of their 60 points. The Pacers also capitalized on second-chance opportunities for 11 points and forced 7 turnovers from Haverford, turning them into 4 points. However, shooting woes plagued the team throughout, as they connected on just 34.3% (23-of-67) from the field and 14.3% (4-of-28) from beyond the arc.

The game started competitively, with Marywood tying the score at 8-8 midway through the first half on a fastbreak layup by Loftin. Bivins sparked an early run with a layup and free throw to cut the deficit to 8-5, but Haverford's efficient offense—shooting 55.6 percent in the first half—built a commanding 54-27 lead by intermission. The Fords' bench depth was evident, outscoring Marywood's reserves 34-8 in the opening 20 minutes.

In the second half, the Pacers battled back with contributions from across the roster. Loftin drained a three to make it 59-31, and Bivins added a fastbreak layup to push the offense. Cheney provided a spark with back-to-back threes late in the game, including one assisted by Andrew Quinn to cut the margin under 50. Quinn finished with six points and two assists off the bench, while Noah Perry added five points and three assists.

Despite the effort, Haverford's balanced attack proved too much, with six players in double figures led by Isaac Varghese's 19 points off the bench. The Fords dominated the glass 44-30 and scored 46 points in the paint, extending their lead to as much as 53 in the final minutes.

Marywood wraps up its non-conference slate and looks ahead to Atlantic East Conference play, starting with a home matchup against Immaculata on January 8. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Insalaco Arena.
