Virginia Beach, Va.- The Marywood University men's lacrosse team fell on the road to Virginia Wesleyan University, 16–3, on Saturday afternoon in nonconference action.
Marywood (4-4) started strong and briefly held the lead in the opening quarter. After Virginia Wesleyan struck first,
Alexander Votra tied the game with 6:40 remaining in the first off an assist from
Ben Meighan.
Votra then gave the Pacers their only lead of the contest, converting a man-up opportunity with 1:32 left in the period, again set up by Meighan. The Marlins answered in the closing seconds with a man-up goal from Keagan Hall to even the game at 2-2 after one quarter.
Virginia Wesleyan (6-1) pulled ahead in the second period with a pair of goals, including a man-up tally from Thomas Lewis IV, to take a 4-2 advantage into halftime.
The Marlins broke the game open in the third quarter, scoring seven goals in the period to extend the lead. Ethan Smith scored twice during the stretch, while Logan Czerwinski, Zachary Dupill, Noah McCarty, and Ben Andrews also contributed goals.
Osten Grigas scored the Pacers' lone goal of the second half with 10:22 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Virginia Wesleyan added five more goals down the stretch to secure the win.
Votra led Marywood offensively with two goals, while Meighan recorded two assists. Grigas added a goal, and
Luke Ament went 13-for-20 at the faceoff spot. Goalkeeper
Colin Trainor made 12 saves.
Virginia Wesleyan was paced by Hall's four goals, while Smith and Ryan Mathers each added two. The Marlins outshot Marywood 49-32 and held a 37-27 edge in ground balls.
Marywood will return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 18, when it hosts Penn College.
