Comeback City! Pacers Erase 3-Goal Deficit in Last 90 Seconds, Topple Cougars in OT

Danica Kelly scores woman-down game-winning goal

Union, N.J. — Marywood University women's lacrosse came back from a three-goal deficit in the final 90 seconds on Friday. The Pacers defeated Kean University 15-14 in overtime.

Danica Kelly scored the game-winning goal with 1:45 remaining in the first overtime period. Avery Meighan picked up a ground ball and fed a pass to Kelly in transition. Right in front of the circle, Kelly twizzlered a shot to give the Pacers the golden goal.

Kelly finished with a team-high four goals.

Trailing 14-11, the Marywood comeback was fueled by Natalie Yilanjian's goal from Kaitlyn Smith with 1:29 remaining. Seventeen seconds later, Smith fed Danica Kelly an opportunity to cut the Cougars' lead to one goal.

After Smith won the draw control, the Pacers evened the score for the first time since the first quarter intermission, Yilanjian caught a Meighan pass in traffic, cut inside and fired a shot past the keeper to square the score at 14-14.

Yilanjian had another chance to win the game in regulation; however, her shot was stopped by Kean keeper Brooke Sztenderowicz.

In overtime, Marywood picked up a yellow card and was forced to play a woman-down for two minutes. Jenny Keagy made a save on Emilie Schultz's shot and picked up the ground ball. Following a failed clear, the Pacers took advantage of a Cougar turnover with a Meighan ground ball with 1:46 left.

Meighan became the third in Marywood women's lacrosse history to reach the 200-goal plateau. She finished with two goals and four assists for six points. Meighan added eight ground balls, seven draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Smith notched three goals and four assists for seven points. She changed the Pacers' momentum with eight draw controls.

Yilanjian provided five points with four goals and an assist.

Defensively, Haley Abraham caused a pair of turnovers with four ground balls.

Keagy made eight saves for the win, adding three ground balls.

The Cougars had three players — Shannon Palen, Cayla Wurz, Emilie Schultz — with seven points. Palen reached the 100 Point Club with a career-high seven assists.

The Pacers outshot the Cougars 35-26 with a 25-21 advantage in shots on goal. Marywood edged the Cougars 28-25 in ground balls and 16-15 in draw controls.

In the fourth quarter and overtime, the Pacers outnumbered the Cougars 16-15 in draw controls.

Marywood ends a five-game overtime losing streak. It's Marywood's first overtime win since a 14-13 double overtime win against Gwynedd Mercy on April 20.
