Softball Suffers Two Losses to Marymount

Scranton, Pa.- The Marywood University softball team dropped both ends of an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader at home Saturday afternoon, falling to Marymount University 11-2 in five innings in game one and 8-4 in game two.

Game One: Marymount 11, Marywood 2 (5 inn.)
The Pacers found themselves in an early hole after Marymount capitalized in the third inning. A string of two-out hits, including RBI singles from Samantha Richtol, Grace Gilbert, and Valeria Gutierrez De Oliveira, pushed three runs across and gave the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Marywood answered in the bottom of the fourth with its best stretch of the game. Tori Para worked a leadoff walk before Riley Marshall delivered a triple to right-center to get the Pacers on the board. Renee McDonald followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2.

That momentum proved to be short-lived.

Marymount responded immediately in the fifth, putting together a relentless offensive surge. The Saints sent 13 batters to the plate and collected seven hits in the inning, highlighted by multiple RBI knocks from Grace Gilbert, Mady Archer, and Gracie Himmelman. The inning also featured aggressive baserunning and took advantage of a pair of wild pitches and a Marywood error.

Marywood was limited to four hits in game one but made them count in the fourth inning. Marshall finished 1-for-2 with a triple and an RBI, and McDonald added a hit and drove in a run.

In the circle, Brianna Voyer took the loss, allowing 10 runs on 15 hits over 4.1 innings. Megan Linkhorst recorded the final two outs in relief.

Game Two: Marymount 8, Marywood 4
Marywood appeared in control through five innings, building a 4-2 lead behind timely hitting and steady production throughout the lineup. The Pacers struck first in the second inning when McDonald delivered an RBI single to score Ariana Shellman. After Marymount answered with two runs in the third, Marywood responded with a strong middle stretch.

Amber Little tied the game in the fourth with an RBI double before Lauryn Notari followed with a run-scoring single to give the Pacers a 3-2 edge. In the fifth, Riley Marshall extended the lead to 4-2 with an RBI triple to center.

Marywood finished with 10 hits on the afternoon, with Shellman and Marshall each recording two hits. Notari added a pair of hits and an RBI, while Little, McDonald and Marshall each drove in a run.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the sixth inning. After a leadoff error and a single put pressure on the Pacers, Marymount capitalized with patience at the plate, drawing multiple walks and stringing together key hits. Four runs would score in that inning as the visitors took advantage of defensive miscues to turn a two-run deficit into a 6-4 lead.

The Saints added insurance in the seventh inning on a two-run single from Himmelman, extending the lead to four.

Pitcher Emily Dubisz went 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out four. She worked around traffic for much of the game but was undone by the sixth-inning rally. Autumn Calvello recorded the final out of the seventh in relief.

Marywood (12-10, 4-3 AEC) hosts Keystone College in a nonconference doubleheader on Monday at 3 p.m. .
