Baseball Falls to Cyclones in Battle of First-Place Teams

Marywood strands 13 runners on base

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University lost a 6-2 decision to Centenary University Friday in a battle atop the Atlantic East Conference baseball standings. The Pacers and Cyclones resume their series Saturday in Hackettstown, New Jersey. 

Marywood (20-11) stranded 13 runners in a game where it outhit the Cyclones by a 13-10 margin. 

AJ Kuzior doubled twice as part of a 3 for 5 effort. Joel Ayers also finished with three hits. 

Cam Bott reached base three times with a single and two walks. 

Marywood's bullpen continued their streak of 14 2/3 scoreless innings. Owen Reilly allowed just one hit in 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Logan Vakiener got out of a bases-loaded situation for a scoreless eighth. Caleb Fisher struck out one. 

Ethan Reccek went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI. 

The Cyclones scored all six of their runs in the first four innings. Centenary went ahead 2-0 in the second with back-to-back RBI singles from Myles Castillo and Joseph Frei. 

Marywood left the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings. In the latter, Tanner Vicendese hit a single down the left line to score the first run, cutting the deficit to 6-1. The Pacers added another run in the fifth inning. The Pacers led off with an Evan Bruder single to right field, followed by a ground-rule Kuzior double. Reccek brought in the run with a single to right-center field. Centenary starter Anthony Spungin left two runners in scoring position by retiring the side. 

Centenary center fielder Joseph Frei made a diving catch off of a Vicendese liner to deep right center to start the eighth. 

Marywood and Centenary toe off again for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
