Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Marymount on Senior Day

Scranton, Pa.- The Marywood University men's lacrosse team concluded its regular season schedule with an 11-6 loss to Marymount University Saturday afternoon in Atlantic East Conference action.

The team honored seniors Dalton Gerver, Colin Trainor, and Wil Pieters prior to the start of the game.

The Pacers struck first when Ben Meighan found the back of the net midway through the opening quarter. Marymount answered with three straight goals before the end of the period, including two from James Elko, to take a 3-1 lead after one.

Marywood battled back in the second. A man-up goal from Ricky Strobel and an unassisted tally by Sean Bonhag tied the game at 3-3 with just over seven minutes remaining before halftime. But the Saints responded immediately and emphatically. They closed the half on a 3-0 run, capped by Santino Rossitto's goal with 3:42 left, to take a 6-3 advantage into the break.

That stretch proved to be the turning point. Marymount controlled possession throughout the contest, winning 12 of 20 faceoffs and scooping up 49 ground balls compared to Marywood's 30. The Saints turned those extra opportunities into a commanding third quarter, outscoring the Pacers 3-0 and extending the lead to 9-3.

Marywood showed fight late in the fourth quarter. Osten Grigas and Owen Kelly each scored on extra-man opportunities, and Meighan added his second goal of the day as the Pacers trimmed the deficit to five. But the early damage and Marymount's efficiency in the middle quarters were too much to overcome.

Meighan led Marywood with two goals and an assist, while Kelly and Grigas each contributed a goal and an assist. Trainor made 11 saves in the defeat.

Rossitto and Elko led the offensive charge for Marymount, each finishing with three goals, while Ian Fructuoso added two goals and an assist as part of a balanced attack that produced 46 total shots.

Marywood wraps up the regular season with a 6-10 overall record and a 1-3 mark in conference play. The Pacers now turn their focus to the Atlantic East Semifinals, set for next Saturday.
