Women's Lacrosse Hammers Saints, 21-14

Marywood beats Marymount for first time since 2023

Arlington, Va. — Marywood University defeated Marymount University for the first time since 2023 in Atlantic East Conference women's lacrosse action. The Pacers defeated the Saints 21-14 to secure the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. 

Marywood went on a 9-1 run over an 18-minute span in the first half. The Saints cut the Pacers' lead to four twice, and Marywood responded with a pair of four- and five-goal runs.

Natalie Yilanjian led the Pacers with six goals and an assist for seven points. Yilanjian added three draw controls. 

Avery Meighan posted a team-high eight points on four goals and four assists. Meighan added 12 draw controls, 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers. 

Kaitlyn Smith contributed two goals and five assists for seven points. She contributed five draw controls and three ground balls. 

A pair of freshmen helped the Pacers offensively. Alivia Backes had a hat trick, and Danica Kelly provided three goals and an assist. 

Alli Duncan assisted three goals, and Jessica Banta found the net twice. 

Defensively, Veronica McGraw caused two turnovers. Jenna Scala earned the win with seven saves. 

The Pacers defense kept Tess Valentino to four goals and two assists. Mackenzie Morrissette also had six points with two goals and four assists. Ava Vautour had 21 saves. 

Marywood outshot the Saints by a 54-25 margin. The Pacers had a 22-12 advantage in ground balls and a 22-14 edge in draw controls. 

The Pacers end a three-game slide to the Saints. Marywood's last win was a 15-7 win during the 2023 Atlantic East semifinals. The Saints have a 7-5 edge in the all-time series history. 

Marywood opened with two goals from Smith and Kelly in the opening seven minutes. The Saints cut the lead to 3-2 on Valentino's goal from Carmella Garcia. 

The Pacers went on a seven-goal run. Carly Lynch's woman-up goal from Smith gave Marywood a 10-2 lead. Meighan capped the second half scoring with a goal from Smith to make it a 12-3 scoreline at halftime. 

Marymount came out of the break with five straight goals. Valentino's goal from Morrissette cut the Marywood advantage to 12-8. 

The Pacers took advantage of penalties with five goals — four of which came from woman-up chances. Kelly started the run with a goal from Smith at the 7:07 mark of the third quarter. Backes' goal from Meighan with 1:45 left in the quarter provided Marywood with an eight-goal lead. 

Marymount put together another five-goal run over a six-minute span. Carmella Garcia found the net off Morrissette's feed to make it 17-13 with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation. 

Fifty-four seconds later, Meighan manufactured a goal that started a four-goal Marywood run. 

The Pacers (9-6 overall,  3-1 AEC) will welcome Centenary University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
