Brunner Clinches 4-3 Victory for Marywood Over Pratt

Queens, N.Y.- The Marywood University men's tennis team edged Pratt Institute, 4-3, in a tightly contested Atlantic East Conference men's tennis match on Thursday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Pacers (7-6, 2-0 AEC) secured the victory by taking two of three doubles matches before splitting singles play, ultimately relying on depth and resilience in the lower half of the lineup to outlast the Cannoneers (6-3, 2-1 AEC).

After dropping the top doubles flight, Marywood responded with strong performances at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The tandem of Zane Smoker and Isaac Carpenter cruised to a 6-2 win to even the doubles point, and Jack Biggs and Aidan Brunner followed with a 7-5 victory to give the Pacers a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

Pratt answered quickly in singles, claiming wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take a 2-1 advantage. Mikah Liu topped Gavin Gagliardi in straight sets, while Wyatt Myers outlasted Alex Corcoran in a competitive match that featured a tiebreak in the opening set.

Marywood regained control in the middle of the lineup. Smoker delivered a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, and Fred Kloss added another straight-set victory at No. 5 to put the Pacers back in front, 3-2.

The match ultimately came down to the final two courts. Pratt evened the score at 3-3 with a win at No. 4 singles, leaving the outcome to be decided at No. 6. Brunner rose to the occasion, bouncing back from a second-set tiebreak loss to dominate the third set and secure a 6-1, 6-7 (8-10), 6-1 victory, clinching the match for Marywood.

The Pacers head to Marymount next Saturday.
