Pacers Rattle Nine in a Row to Roll into AEC Finals

Marywood reaches conference final for seventh time in program history

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University women's lacrosse broke out of a tie with nine unanswered goals to reach the Atlantic East Conference women's lacrosse championship game. The second-seeded Pacers defeated No. 3 Marymount University 15-6 on Saturday in the semifinal. 

The women's lacrosse team reached its seventh conference championship game in program history. Marywood looks for its first conference title against Neumann University on Saturday, May 2 at 1 p.m. 

Marymount tied the game at 6-6 in the opening minute of the second half. The Pacers held the defending Atlantic East championships scoreless for the remaining 29 minutes. 

The Pacers broke out of the tie on a woman-up goal from Danica Kelly with 8:54 remaining in the third quarter. A minute later, Kaitlyn Smith scored a woman-down goal from Avery Meighan for an 8-6 lead. With 5:23 left, Natalie Yilanjian tallied another woman-down goal. 

Marywood (11-6) tallied six goals over a seven-minute span in the third quarter. 

Smith led the Pacers offensively with seven points. She had five goals and two assists. Smith added nine of the team's 12 draw controls. She added three ground balls. 

Meighan notched four goals and four assists for eight points. She produced five ground balls, four caused turnovers, and three draw controls. 

Kelly garnered a hat trick for the Pacers. Yilanjian scored twice. Alivia Backes also had a goal and an assist. 

Carly Lynch recorded five ground balls, and Felicia Pescatore picked up four ground balls. 

In goal, Jenna Scala made five saves — including three on key free-position attempts — to keep the Saints at bay. 

Marywood reaches the Atlantic East final for the first time since 2023. It is the Pacers' third AEC finals appearance (2019, 2023, 2026). Marywood made Colonial States Athletic Conference championship game in 2011, 2012, 2017 and 2018. 

Smith tied the single-season points record (113). Meighan tied the single-season ground balls record (78). 

Marywood and Marymount traded goals in the opening five minutes with goals from Meighan and Natalie Ortiz. Alivia Backes assisted a Smith goal and scored herself to give the Pacers a 3-1 lead. 

Following Mackenzie Morrissette's unassisted goal to put the Saints within one, Meighan scored back-to-back goals to start the second quarter. She assisted Kelly's goal to put Marywood ahead by a 6-2 score. 

Similar to Sunday's contest between the two teams in Virginia, Marymount scored four straight goals to tie the game. The Saints scored three times in a 2:03 span to close the opening half.
